On Sunday, February 21, the Hope’s In organization, a nonprofit founded in 2012 by Barrington High School students and twin sisters Ashley and Courtney Quigley, held its annual fashion show fundraiser at the Stonegate Conference and Banquet Centre. Barrington area student leaders, and fashion show model and designer teams, planned the well-orchestrated event and colorful outfits around the theme of “Treasures”.
Fashions seen on the Hope’s In runway this year included the bright colors of Guatemala, and clothing made of repurposed materials, representing the manner in which people who live impoverished by ravines filled with garbage in Guatemala must rely on the discarded materials they find to survive.
“In Guatemala, the people who live around the garbage dumps are called ‘scavengers’ by more fortunate citizens there,” said Laura Mena, the event’s chairwoman for 2015 and 2016. “Hope’s In calls these people ‘treasures’ instead, following the lead of Potter’s House,” she says of efforts to dignify the families that the Hope’s In organization serves each summer on mission trips.
Potter’s House Association, a Wisconsin-based nonprofit, maintains a humanitarian center in the Guatemala garbage dump communities to oversee services and coordinate the building of small houses, one of the main services that Hope’s In provides. Each summer, Hope’s In gathers a large group of Barrington area residents to travel to Guatemala with their hands, hearts, and thoughts of healing. A medical MASH-like unit of doctors also make the trip to address health issues of the families and children they meet there.
Hope’s In and the vision of its founders continues to grow and gain momentum, attracting new ideas for making the world a better place in Guatemala and beyond. Step inside the fashion show in the pages ahead and meet today’s talented and committed Hope’s In student contributors—and tomorrow’s philanthropic leaders.
