In August 1914, a group of civic-minded ladies formed the Barrington Women’s Club, motivated with the desire to establish a cultural and service-based organization, as noted in Arnett C. Lines’ “A History of Barrington”. Led by a total of 22 presidents as recorded from its formation in 1914 through 1957, the club made a lasting impact in a wide variety of areas—forming the first kindergarten, creating the first school cafeteria, holding informative baby clinics, incubating the first library in town, and even sharing concerns about the wild bird population. The Barrington Women’s Club’s contributions of yesteryear are now standard operating procedures—things we may take for granted today.
In the 1930s, the Barrington Women’s Club sponsored a sister organization, the Barrington Junior Women’s Club (BJWC). For the past 80 years, “Juniors” has maintained itself as a dynamic nonprofit service organization that is a longstanding foundation for women to make and keep wonderful new and lifelong friends. Since BJWC’s founding there have been 70 women who have served as presidents and thousands of members who joined.
BJWC hosts two signature fundraisers each year. Last year’s fall fundraiser, Legendary Ladies, and the Casino Night in March, were the club’s most successful fundraising events to date. Based on proceeds from both events, $57,000 was awarded in grants, $17,500 provided as scholarships to Barrington High School seniors, and $50,000 was donated to support the Barrington Splash Pad project at Langendorf Park.
On Saturday, November 12, the Barrington Junior Women’s Club will hosts “Diamonds & Pearls—A Rock Tribute to Fashion”, which is a fitting tribute to the hardworking, devoted, and charismatic women who, for the past 80 years to now, have lifted the lives and spirits of the entire Barrington area community and made friendships to last a lifetime.
I am honored to serve this year as the president of BJWC with our mission to improve the lives of women, children, and seniors in our community. We do this through our annual grant process and direct service programs such as Safetytown, Sunny Hill Tutoring, Meals with Wheels, Barrington Giving Day, and more. BJWC has a history of bringing creative, caring, and smart women together to help others in need, while simultaneously developing lasting friendships. I love that there is a ripple effect helping other local organizations to succeed as our members often use the training, experience, and network building they develop in BJWC to assist other causes and charities in our area.
Through our partnerships with Sunny Hill, Barrington Giving Day, and the Barrington Area Council on Aging (BACOA), Barrington Junior Women’s Club is able to make a positive impact on the lives of women, children, and the elderly the Barrington area.
BJWC is important to me because it made me philanthropic again. BJWC’s focus is on fundraising and volunteering. It’s through the opportunity to fundraise and volunteer that we’re able to drive change in our community.
It is fantastic being part of a group of women that work together to better our community. The amount of time and care that each BJWC member puts in to her service to Barrington is remarkable. I’d like to think that those efforts have bettered the lives of women, children, and seniors in our area.

“BJWC is proud to have had the leadership, dedication, and support of the talented women that were our Past Presidents. Past Presidents serve as advisors for two years to the current president when they step down from their role. Many also retain their status as either active members, or associate members and continue to b e active community members in the Barrington area.” –Barrington Junior Women’s Club
